Montumental

History

Carved by glaciers.

Founded by a legend.

Cared for by a family.

Our History

Built on top of a natural rise on a region carved by glaciers retreating at the end of the last ice age, Mont du Lac was founded in 1948 by Tony Wise, the founder of the American Birkebeiner ski race.

The narrow strip of land the resort rests upon lies on the western side of the historic St. Louis River, which means Mont du Lac is actually in Wisconsin, a fact that often surprises our visitors.

For many years after opening, Mont du Lac was the only place to downhill ski in the region. But it wasn’t until 2008 that the historic winter destination would transition to a four-season resort with fine dining, plentiful lodging and endless activities.

Currently owned and operated by Larry and Donna Pulkrabek, Mont du Lac has been given new life through extensive renovation and modernization. Still perched atop the same pinnacle where it’s stood for over 70 years, Mont du Lac now stands as a family-run resort dedicated to endless family fun.
